Essential SQUEEZE

Well, it’s nearly time for the release of the Essential Squeeze CD and DVD (30 April and counting) and I thought you might like to know what’s in store…

Firstly the CD. The tracklisting is:

Take me I’m Yours
Goodbye Girl
Cool for Cats
Up The Junction
Slap & Tickle
Another Nail In My Heart
Pulling Mussels (From The Shell)
Is That Love
Tempted
Labelled With Love
Black Coffee In Bed
Annie Get Your Gun
Last Time Forever
Hourglass
Some Fantastic Place
Loving You Tonight
This Summer
Without You Here

So far so good. However, it also includes two previously unreleased songs from the archives:

Library Girl
Last Call For Love

Library Girl is a classic fast powerpop song from the Argy Bargy recording sessions. Squeeze played it live in 1980 but never produced a finished mix and it was sadly left off the album. She truly was “The girl with deep, deep eyes.” You’ll love it, it’s a great song and the guitar solo is a stunner.

Last Call For Love is, so far, the greatest thing I’ve heard that Squeeze have never released. It’s a slow ballad from the Sweets From A Stranger recordings, but don’t let that put you off. It’s utterly beautiful, with Glenn accompanied by a full orchestra. It’s a major piece of work which could easily have been a single in its own right. It’s utterly uplifting and inspiring with a melody to die for. As Glenn told me, “I’m really proud of it.”

Both Library Girl and Last Call For Love have been taken from the original 24 track master tapes from Universal’s archives and painstakingly mixed by Glenn in his own studio. Both should also be included in the reissues of the respective albums later in the year.
So, something to look forward to there.

Now for the DVD. You may have the various hits DVDs that have been produced over the years, either on The Big Squeeze or on Greatest Hits. They’re the usual suspects:

Take Me I’m Yours
Cool For Cats
Up The Junction
Another Nail In My Heart
Pulling Mussels
Is That love
Messed Around
Tempted
Black Coffee in Bed
Love’s Crashing Waves
853-5937
Hits of the year
Last Time forever
Hour Glass
Trust me to Open My Mouth
Footprints
If Its Love

However, what most fans want is the other videos that have never been released. Well, here they are, all included:

Heaven Knows
Some Fantastic Place
Third Rail
This Summer
Sunday Street
Satisfied
Loving You Tonight
And as if that isn’t enough there’s a live concert:

14-track 45 minute TV concert from the Regal Theatre, Hitchin 30/08/82. Recorded by the BBC, and a simultaneous broadcast on BBC TV and radio, this show was free for memebers of the Official Squeeze Fan Club (I know, because I did work experience in the Squeeze management office in summer ’82 and helped arrange it.) I’m occasionally in the picture in the front row, far right, bopping wildly.

Here are the tracks:

Cool For Cats
In Quintessence
I’ve Returned
Is That Love
Another Nail In My Heart
Tempted
Annie Get Your Gun
Someone Else’s Heart
Points Of View
Piccadilly
Pulling Mussels (From A Shell)
Labelled With Love
Up The Junction
I Can’t Hold On

I hope that you’ll agree that Universal, with Chris and Glenn’s cooperation have done a great job in bringing Squeeze back into the public eye – especially when you have the shock of seeing the TV ads!

Enjoy the magic that was, is and will be Squeeze.
