    • Here’s the review:

As Squeeze downshifted into a vamping groove near the end of “Tempted” on Wednesday night, singer and guitarist Glenn Tilbrook worked his way through band introductions, starting with players whom fans at Gibson Amphitheatre might not be familiar, until finally reaching Chris Difford, the only one other than Tilbrook that they absolutely knew and adored.
A songwriting team for more than three decades now, Difford & Tilbrook’s occasionally tempestuous partnership has led to long breaks for Squeeze, both in the studio and on the road – a history Tilbrook joked about in describing how the pair used to fight to the point of mutual hospitalization.

“We tested each other but now we love each other again,” he said, as Difford offered a wry smile and the very enthusiastic crowd cheered.
Thank goodness the love is back, for when Squeeze is on – as it was Wednesday for 19 of its best-loved songs across 90 minutes or so – it’s a wonderful thing to behold.
Opening with “Take Me I’m Yours,” the band arrived on a stage made over in a style reminiscent of a ’60s television variety show, adorned with red and white geometric backdrops on which video images, including a montage of vintage Squeeze clippings from the British music press, were projected throughout the night. The dapper suits all five wore added to the night’s throwback approach.
But while the songs were old and very well-known by fans – “Annie Get Your Gun” and “Black Coffee in Bed” followed the opener – the group played them with the kind of heart and zest that made you forget about that, delivering them on stage as if they were tunes off a brand new album. (Which technically, we suppose, many of them are: “Spot the Difference,” for which this tour is named, is a re-recording of 14 Squeeze hits, due Tuesday.)
It probably helped that Difford and Tilbrook have kept Squeeze together more or less since 2007 when they initially reunited after an eight-year break. Having a steady and very sharp backing band also kept things tight: bassist John Bentley played with the group in the early ’80s on many of the original recordings of these songs, while drummer Simon Hanson and keyboardist Stephen Large (who played the first iPad solo we’ve ever seen, in lieu of the plinking keyboard line in “Cool for Cats”) have supported Tilbrook on solo tours for years.
Of course, it also helps that both Tilbrook and Difford still have distinctive voices seemingly unchanged in the last 30 years. That’s perhaps not that noticeable for Difford, whose harmonies and occasional lead vocals are in a comfortably low range on songs such as “Cool for Cats” and “Someone Else’s Heart.” But it’s truly remarkable to hear Tilbrook’s soulful tenor effortlessly soaring through higher ranges on tunes like “When the Hangover Strikes” and “If It’s Love.”
Maybe most crucially, though, is that it truly looked as though the band was having a blast on stage, and that enjoyment clearly translated to the sterling quality of the show. (Even on the occasional bobble, such as Difford and Tilbrook getting a fraction out of sync by the breathless finish of the vocal break in “Hourglass,” only resulted in a quick smile between the two, an acknowledgement of how fun that had been.)
The final sign of a good show? The encore – “Another Nail in My Heart” and “Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)” – ended much too soon, leaving fans cheering for more as the band waved and bowed and disappeared from the stage.
