Some Fantastic Songs! (Squeeze Poll Results)

Recently when a friend of mine asked me why I liked Squeeze so much I paused and thought for a few moments before concluding, “They explained my life to me.”

When I was a young teenager “kitchen sink” songs like “The Prisoner” helped me understand how day to day life could lead to an intolerable situation, as in my own parent’s divorce. They also helped me see why being in love (new to me!) could be so hard.

When I was in my late 20′s and my eight-year relationship ended I listened to “It’s Over” (and the entire Some Fantastic Place and Play albums) until I finally believed that it was.

And when things started to get better after that very painful breakup, “This Summer”, “If It’s Love”, and many other songs helped me express what was happening inside me: optimism, possibility, fresh hope!

Squeeze songs are not simple. They are about complicated situations. Who would ever choose to be the couple in “Letting Go”? But at the same time, who doesn’t know exactly how it feels?

For many of us long term Squeeze fans, listening to their albums has been a journey we’ve taken while experiencing our own ever-changing lives. When you put all the songs together you get a tremendous tapestry of human experience, relationships, situations, and of course a whole spectrum of emotions.

A few years ago a large scale poll was conducted to find out what Squeeze fans’ favorite songs were, but the results were never widely published. Taking everything into account, with all the songs to choose from, which ones do we like best? These are the top 20 songs, which represent 61% of the total votes. The top 5 spots took a whopping 30% of the total votes!

1. Some Fantastic Place
2. Up The Junction
3. Another Nail In My Heart
4. Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)
5. Tempted

6. Is That Love
7. If I Didn’t Love You
8. Piccadilly
9. Annie Get Your Gun
10. Take Me I’m Yours
11. Maidstone
12. Black Coffee In Bed
13. Labelled With Love
14. Walk Away
15. In Quintessence
16. The Truth
17. Letting Go
18. Woman’s World
19. The Elephant Ride
20. Cool For Cats

Squeeze on my Tivo

I was excited when I got home tonight to check out Squeeze’s appearance as musical guests on Regis and Kelly, which had been recorded during the day. I hadn’t see the show before, so I watched the whole thing, and enjoyed the interview with Steve Carell and laughed at Kelly in the children’s gymnastics class.

I mused to myself, “I’m sure it has been at least TEN YEARS since I’ve seen Squeeze on tv,” and then quickly realised that of course that was true since they had disbanded for ten years. What a treat to see them now! When Regis finally introduced the band, I was thrilled they were going to do Goobye Girl! Great choice for national television exposure: so recognisable, so timeless, and one of my very favorites!

…And then my tv reception started to crap out.

The timing was impeccable. Regis was crystal clear as he introduced them, but by the time the camera had swung over to the band, things were already getting a little blurry.

From that point things gradually (yet swifty!) degenerated, so that by the time Glenn played the final chord it looked like this.

So, although I agree with David that it’s vital someone in America upload the show to YouTube, I think you’ll all thank me for not volunteering!!

Squeeze are now in the US for their Summer tour. They start off on the Regis and Kelly show tomorrow morning. All dates for the tour can be found at www.squeezeofficial.com

Squeeze ‘Spot The Difference’ is being released on Anchor & Hope Records in the US on 3rd August. Over the last few months lots of hard work has gone in to re-recording some of the old catalogue, this release is your first opportunity to hear these great songs all refreshed and lovely. We are very proud of the recordings and hope you won’t be able to spot too many differences!

Don’t forget we have the big UK tour at the end of the year, dates on the official website also.

If you have not joined any of the facebook pages do have a look, they are a hive of activity.

There is lots of exciting press and radio in the UK and US to look forward to this year, keep an eye on the websites and facebook/myspace pages.

Glenn’s ‘Pandemonium Ensues’ album is going to be re-released very soon on Saturday Morning Music Club. There will be additional tracks and videos/photos available. One of the tracks is a previously unreleased song and there will be demos and acoustic versions. If you do not know about SMMC please check out Chris Difford’s site for information.

Glenn will be going up Mount Fuji this August with the Love Hope Strength Foundation. You can find more information here: www.lovehopestrength.org

You will also find information here on the bone marrow drives that LHS will be doing at all the US Squeeze shows this summer. We are really proud that we have managed to work with LHS to make this happen, all the venues and promoters on the tour have been very helpful in all arrangements so a big thanks to them also. If there are any (and we hope there will be) bone marrow matches from a donor that has donated from our shows, we will be informed and will pass that information on to you all.

Hope you are having a great summer.

Thanks for all the continued support.

Squeeze on Regis and Kelly

Hosts Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa will welcome Squeeze for a live performance on their show on Thursday, July 8, 2010!! Please tune in to watch Squeeze perform one of their greatest hits! Also, they will be promoting their US tour which starts July 9th AND their new record Spot The Difference which will be released August 2010! “LIVE! with Regis and Kelly” airs every weekday in national syndication, check local listings for time and station.

So which hit will it be? I suspect they might do two numbers, one in the show and one under the credits at the end. Here’s what they actually did:

Cashmere If You Can

Well Chris Difford’s new album has been available for a few weeks now – in parts! It’s being released as part of Saturday Morning Music Club, where each week (yes, you guessed it, on a Saturday) a new track, plus b-sides, videos, photos, song lyrics and notes by Chris are released to your desktop by a shiny new application.

Here’s what’s available so far in terms of music:

Introduction – 5 June 2010
1975
Funky Dory
Po
Battersea Boys (demo)

Chapter 1 – 19 June 2010
Like I Did
Velvet Zone
She Is The Walrus
Trippy Take Me

Chapter 2 – 26 June 2010
The Still and the Sparkling
As Bill Sees It
Lover In Bombay

Chapter 3 – 3 July 2010
Back In The Day
Slap & Tickle (Country and Western version)
Under The Mon
Koh-I-Noor

It’s available for £20 and you get something like 10 chapters. It’s a fascinating way of releasing music and far better value than a CD when you consider all the extras and the personal connection with the artist. My favourite so far? It’s got to be Polestar I think:

She was a dancer who lived round a pole
From 8 until midnight, then she would go home
To kids eating kit kats and drinking Dad’s beer
While he was still there sleeping, headphones in his ear

Isn’t that just classic Difford?

Here are some decent YouTube videos of the Squeeze performance including one of Glenn Tilbrook appearing with The Feeling.

Here are some dodgy YouTube videos with poor sound to give you an idea of the performance at Cornbury:

Here’s what Cornbury Festival’s Web site had to say:

Getting the crowd into the festival mood will be cool cats Squeeze who will entertain the main stage on Saturday evening. The band, whose enduring hits including Cool For Cats and Up The Junction, made some of the best loved songs of their generation and paved the way for many of today’s most successful indie pop acts.

Looking forward to your reviews, ticket stubs, photos and videos

Since 2007, a newly reformed Squeeze have been slowly finding time to play a series of gigs and festival dates, preferring to reaffirm their abilities as a band rather than follow some of their peers who have come out in a blaze of publicity, only to be met with disappointment. The new Squeeze line-up, their most able yet, is completed by Squeeze veteran John Bentley and Tilbrook’s Fluffers cohorts Simon Hanson and Stephen Large, and has become an instant favourite on the festival circuit since reforming with appearances at V, Oxygen, T in the Park and Latitude

Well, it was billed as Glenn Tilbrook and The Hubcaps, but a five piece from South London turned up.
