Squeeze Covered – Up the Junction

It won’t be confined just to me but certain songs have the ability to stir up long forgotten memories. Squeeze have been a part of my life since the late 1970s so it’s no surprise that hearing their songs can cause me to reminisce (I’m also at the age when you tend to look back rather than look forward!). “Pulling Mussels” reminds me of an end of season football match in York when one of our gang proudly proclaimed that he knew exactly what that song was about. “[[Tempted]]” brings back memories of my first proper holiday, walking along the Torquay sea front with my treasured Philips portable radio to my ear, listening to the Paul Burnett who says “Here’s the new Squeeze single and as you’d expect it’s a beautiful song” (or words to that effect). “[[Last Time Forever]]” reminds me of watching Channel 4’s The Tube the whole way through, with VCR remote control in hand, poised to press record as soon as Squeeze appeared. “[[Loving You Tonight]]” was what I wanted playing on my wedding day for the bride and groom’s first dance. Unfortunately, the DJ didn’t have it and proceeded to play the vomit inducing “Everything I Do” by Bryan Adams.
“[[Up The Junction]]” also holds specific memories for me. I can remember it being played on BBC Radio 1 frequently whilst I was helping my brother redecorate the downstairs of his terraced house which had been badly affected by 4 feet of flood water from the River Ouse in York in early 1979. The Bad Shepherds’ folk style cover features Ade Edmondson on lead vocal, which he delivers with some or other passions. I’m not sure what his alter-ego Vyvyan from “The Young Ones” would think but I quite like it.
