Squeeze Covered – Black Coffee In Bed and Tempted

Late on Friday night, the presenter of a local BBC radio show I frequently listen to said,

“I think we all collectively owe Squeeze an apology … I don’t think we appreciated Squeeze as much as we should have done when they were around. I think we liked them but we never really loved them like we should. Looking back we realise now what a great band they were …”.

Ignoring his ignorance about the fact that Squeeze are very much still around with a new album just around the corner, it is a sentiment I do have sympathy with though I’m not sure who is to blame or who should actually be apologising. Were they managed badly by Miles Copeland? Were they poorly promoted by A&M? Was it the fact that they didn’t have an image or their music didn’t fit into any particular pigeon hole? Was it the fans fault for not buying enough of their records or buying them from the “wrong” music outlets? I tried to do my bit in the 80s but my love of Squeeze was often met with indifference or, on a couple of occasions, downright hostility. Whatever the reason, I agree that Squeeze didn’t get the appreciation their music deserved and I’m not confident that their new album will do anything to change this, no matter how good it is.

Thankfully, some of our friends across the pond do appreciate Squeeze as is shown by this week’s cover choices. I hope you enjoy these as much as I do.

Well, I’ve got to get back to finding some clothes to throw in a suitcase for my annual two week holiday in Majorca. Plenty of sun, sangria and … sleep is on the cards and, hopefully, my batteries will get recharged in the process.

Until next time, toodle pip!
