You can blame me for it not appearing on the reissued Sweets From A Stranger album. I chose to put Annie Get Your Gun on there within the 79 minute limit instead. The aim was to broaden the appeal to those who've grown up without Squeeze in the last 23 years since Hourglass was a hit. That was on the understanding that there would be a 4CD book-style career-spanning box set (on which it would be a highlight of a CD of rarities) just like the Mamas & Papas Complete Anthology hardback book and CDs. Hmmmm...

Strangely this song didn't appear on the expanded SFAS re-issue and, as far as I'm aware, hasn't appeared on any of their other compilations either. The bonus for me was that it forced me to go up to the loft and bring down the vynil. There's something magic about hearing the hiss and crackles.

Here are the original lyrics to The Hunt from before it was recorded, with the missing verse and changed lyrics. It was Chris Difford's brother Lew's favourite Squeeze song.

The Hunt (original lyrics)
(Difford/Tilbrook)

Give a man a gun
Give him a cigar
He’ll think about a shot
Sitting at a bar
Strip him of his clothes
Stand him on a box
The man’s become a hound
Hunted by the fox

Give a man a girl
Give a man a bed
See him chase her heart
Once around his head
See him try to fight
Standing in his socks
Hands upon his guns
Cornered by the fox

Give a man a drink
Give a man the time
Drinking to his thoughts
Bottled up inside
He’ll tell a few jokes
Stumble in the dark
The fox is moving in
Baited by his bark

Draw him like a bow
Aim him at the world
He pretends to know
And then he’ll swim up to the rocks
(And then he’ll) be beaten by the fox
