I remember it well! Loved every minute. I even remember what shirt I was wearing, who I was with and what I drank! Seriously, it was a fabulous show, as always.

I was waiting to meet some friends outside The Plaza Hotel, June 17, 1982. Squeeze was set to play the Peppermint Lounge that night, as they were on the bill with Elvis Costello at MSG on June 18th. To my surprise, the band comes out of the hotel and there’s a jazz trio (guitar, stand up bass, and drums) busking by the fountain. The manager goes over and hands the buskers some cash and asks if the boys could pose for some photos with their gear. Not only did they agree, but Squeeze did an acoustic version of “Messed Around” right there in front of about a dozen people, most of them oblivious to who they were. After the song ended, a mom with a baby in a stroller turned to Tilbrook and said “Only one song? You guys are pretty good” And yes, I wound up going to the Peppermint Lounge show that night, too and only have about a dozen blurry photos to prove it.

The way I remember it, and I have the add cut out and in a book to prove it, I had no idea they were playing there that night. My buddy was looking through the R&R Newspaper, The Aquarian, that day and he says to me, isn’t this the same lettering from their album? Sweets From A stranger had just come out and all of the letters in the song titles were encircled on the back of the album. The add for The Peppermint Lounge that night had that type of lettering but all it said was SURPRISE – They’ve returned. So we called up the Peppermint Lounge and asked if that was Squeeze and they said yes. So off we were. The room was like the size of my living room and the stage was only like 6 inches off the floor, so they were playing right in your face. If I could upload a picture here I would upload the add. It says show at 10 but I’m pretty sure they didn’t go on until midnight or later. I remember when, well I can’t remember if it was Glenn or Paul Carrack(Not sure if he was still with them) sang, “I bought a toothbrush” and he just got bombarded with toothbrushes from the audience. Pretty sure Carrack was gone by then.
