Here we met up with Rona and Maggie sporting ‘Caring, sharing and lovely’ T shirts. The venue is a former corn exchange turned cinema turned music venue and is rather beautiful, old and atmospheric. But has no bar. Lorks! We had to ship booze in from the pub next door and range the bottles in an embarrassing line along the stage. Because it’s a cinema there isn’t any ‘milling’ space at the front, but we managed to get front row seats as due compensation for queuing outside in freezing fog with no coats on. There were maybe 300 seats and happily they were all filled, plus some of the standing room down the sides. Lots of lovely lucre for our boy.

Glenn was late, caught in the fog. The venue manager gave us regular progress reports to say where he was, so we all lived every mile of the journey with him. Consequently when he eventually bounced in through the front door (no stage door!) he was met full on by a full-to-capacity applauding audience.

GIRLIE BIT: Black T shirt, grey (once black?) jeans, blue trainer type shoes that looked a bit like those slippers old ladies wear with a zip up the front. By his own estimation he was ‘deeply fashionable’. Hair was..well..optimum – plenty of curls yet not too long. He’s most definitely a slimmer Glenn with perhaps a touch of sunburn. He also had a bit of a cold
which affected his voice very slightly from time to time, but he was nonetheless on dazzling form – happy and chatty and belting the songs out with gusto.

SONGS: The Truth, Tough Love, Vanity Fair, TIWYA, Voodoo Chile (broke a string with an impressive twang and then switched to 12 string……) Maidstone (ahhhhhhhhh!), UTJ, Wine Spodee Odee, Cash Machine, Observatory (back to 6…) Vicky Verky, Piccadilly (unimpressive audience participation), Take Me, Always on my Mind (audience practically in tears), SFP (dedicated to George
Harrison tonight as he finds it hard to otherwise express his appreciation of George and his influence), Tempted, Parallel World (like all middle aged folk it’s become his lot to rant at the telly when some bad kiddie band is on, but concedes that Chris Braide will make far more money from the recent S Club 7 single than he ever will from Parallel World), Other World,
Hangover, Goodbye Girl, Annie (Wal requested this and said ‘please’ twice – grovelling may be a good way of getting requests played) and Hourglass.

THE ANECDOTES: The motor home saga and how the sponsorship deal fell through. How he then acquired his own second hand 1988 RV with 10,000 miles on the clock and ‘Jesus Saves’ stickers on the inside. He realises that RVs are usually the province of elderly retired folk but he’s into the outdoors and camping in a big way so it seemed like a good idea. He managed to add
another 5030 miles to it and it’s now somewhere south of LA where it’s being repaired after breaking down.

The Andy Williams show and how, as a kid, he would enjoy the audience ‘spontaneously’ breaking into applause every week after the first 2 lines of the closing song. He asked us to indulge him by doing the same to his songs, and so it was duly done….not without a little irony.

Glenn DNA – offered free to anyone who bought the album so that in future years we could grow our own Glenn – make him do the sweeping up, or whatever.

The option of going to the pub next door, as he was conscious of our personal comfort and happiness. The vote came back a resounding ‘no’, probably due to the freezing fog and the rather insalubrious nature of said pub.

SYNOPSIS AND POST-SHOW: The audience was very appreciative and well behaved (apart from Wal and Rona , who were frankly raucous) but some of us were shifting about in our trousers itching to get to our feet – not really possible in an all-seater venue like this. Everyone left at great speed at the end so there were only the usual suspects hanging around for a chat afterwards.

Glenn was in high spirits after having seen Charlton beat Spurs 3-1 the previous day, especially as they’d been on a bit of a losing streak while he ‘d been in America. We asked him about a tour with the Party and the answer was fairly vague and cagey but the gist of it was that if he tours with them he wants to keep some continuity going by doing all the dates in one block.
He’d felt that the couple of odd dates he did with the band this summer had been disappointing (you’re telling me – I was at Greenwich) so it would have to be a full-on tour or nothing. And as he’d like to tour with them in America it was looking as though it would be summer before he could get anything organised. Which would depend on finances. He was going over to the
US in January, and I think he said he was unlikely to tour over here again before Easter.

Wal also asked him if he could do Up the Creek solo and acoustic – “don’t know, never tried”…..er….basically “no” then!

It was so good to see him on such good form, and he didn’t seem at all tired as I’d expected him to be after so many months of incessant touring. The question is, can I last out until Easter without another fix?
