Glenn’s body has aged with mine but the voice is still perfect. He did a 90% request laid back acoustic concert. He had broken his ankle a week before and was hobbling noticeably but off crutches and in very good spirits. A part of me was sad to see this incredible talent playing such a hole in the wall (packed as it was), yet I was also pleased he has moved forward and seemed quite content with who and where he was or “this is where he ain’t-wasn’t etc”, I read later that he does these pub tours regularly in England, even keeping some of the bits, such as leaving the stage to take a whiz and returning with a knockout accapella number, “Goodbye Girl” in this case. The highlight was a request for the Costello collaboration, Whisper to A Scream. Glenn was impressed by the request and agreed but lamented it would be tricky doing both parts and threw out half heartedly someone from the audience could come up and sing Elvis’s part. To everyone’s shock a guy took him up and pulled it off flawlessly as his girlfriend snapped pictures excitedly. I think the guy was from a local band and thus had some preparation on his end but what a shock when Glenn dove in-great number. He deserves better but then again I got the privilege of seeing one of the great artists of my generation front row for 13 bucks. It was the 2nd time I’d been that close, the last time was 1980 dancing right up front to Squeeze and never forgetting Glenn leaning down and singing directly to the woman who is now my wife. Great night, supreme voice, and on acoustic guitar really showed off his licks.”
