The Return of the Magnificent Steven

Just when you think Tilbrook Tuesdays can’t get any better, along comes another to knock the socks off your Little Feet.
There wasn’t much Traffic tonight so the Journey was easy. I arrived in Charlton earlier than usual, opened The Doors and there was Snip, Nicki, Dave S and Gill already present. A little later, greeted with a handshake or a Kiss came David B, Louisa and Julian, Liz and Russ, Sarah, Neil and his son Adam, Cathy, Val, Sue, Neil and Lorraine and Mike O. Not Bad Company when all is said and done but no Charlotte or Stevenage Gary.
Glitter ball suspended and sound check underway, who should arrive but Stephen Large himself. Snip had spied the red keyboard Stephen used to play and wondered if the man would turn up. I managed to grab a few minutes with Mr Large and Sarah and he confirmed that Yes, Squeeze at the Albert Hall might indeed be a 5 piece, if you know what I mean. He also confirmed that Lucy was working on the string arrangements, and he was sure that the Rush for tickets will be worth it. There were no strings in the Anchor tonight (apart from the toilet flush thingy), not a guitar in sight, because this was Electronic/Experimental night.
Ten Years After The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook, he still manages to entertain and experiment. The first half of the Free show tonight was a continuous 45 minute keyboard and electronic drum megamix, starting at Hey Jude, via Take Me I’m Yours, Then He Kissed Me, Pocket Calculator, Hot Love, the theme from Chariots of Fire, Popcorn, Dock of the Bay, 25 Miles, Slap & Tickle and the 2001 theme, and I’m sure there were plenty I missed. It was like witnessing an intricate musical Jigsaw, wondering how all the pieces were going to fit together (and can we find all the edges). Partway through the opening number, Glenn and Simon donned similar glasses to Stephen, which put me in mind of The Band Hot Chip.
There was a short interval to allow our Heart rates to return to normal and back on with the show. The 2nd set began with the lovely Stevie Wonder song from last week, You & I (thanks Liz), They also played Still, Best of Times, Tempted, Help in the style of Prince circa 1999, with a bit of the theme from the Televison series Knightrider, Bohemian Rhapsody merging in to Funky Town and J’Taime flowing in to Close To You, and a rousing I Could Be So Good For You. And finally, another funky indeterminate jam that became Blur’s Boys & Girls (lyric free) that got faster and faster and faster still.
There is a fantastic Spirit to these A&H shows; the looseness of the band (and set list), the warmth flowing in both directions, the willingness to try it and if it don’t work, f**k it, the dancing, the singing, the sheer joy of being with mates that share these wonderful Sweet evenings.
Oh well, all over for another 7 days. Out in to the cool air, The Cars already starting to frost up, and a steady drive home, hoping not to attract the attention of The Police.

Cheers, Mark! Brilliant review, brilliant night. The evening at the Anchor was full of wonderful Temptations. It was simply Wizzard. And a real treat to get home & read your review as I sipped my Hot Chocolate in bed :-)

P.S. Snip, there’s nowt wrong with a bit of fluff! Not to mention a bit of a Fluffer!

Well done on remebering so many tracks Mark :) Just rememeberd one or two more. There was (surprisingly for a Charlton fan) a version of “Oh when the saints go marching in”, Popcorn and Material girl.

Great to see everyone again and those boys certainly hadf Specs Apeal :)
