What a great night that was. I hadn’t seen Squeeze since The Warfield show in 1989, after Frank. If anything, they sound better. Steven Large is a hoot to watch on the keys – although he plays a Nord instead of a Hammond.

It was great to see, front and center in the audience: Robin, Melinda & Shawn, and my best-est buddy, Kimberley (who all seemed to have see them play the night before in Napa’s Uptown Theater); they are all even more devoted fans than I am!! My wife Pam and I stood about 30 feet from the front of the stage, since we got to the show after the opening act finished, but we could see all the band, between the taller folks standing between us and the stage. The Fillmore is a great place to see a show: the parking is nearby, the food is good, most of the ushers are cool, and they often give out posters after show. Also, the stage is high enough to see the performers, and the sound is nicely mixed — we could always clearly hear the lead vocals above the instruments, and Glenn guitar and Stephen’s keyboard solos with no problem.

Some show highlights for me: Glenn playing the opening synth keyboard part for “Slap and Tickle”; the extended guitar outro to “The Knack”, the full band arrangement of “Who’s That?” the sparse intro and buildup for “Tempted”, and “Hourglass” (just to see Glenn effortlessly play the tricky guitar parts whilst he’s singing). All in all, a great Squeeze show, with a really nice mix of great songs that a casual fan can sometimes forget about, and the crowd-pleasing hits we all know and.

After the show, we meet up with the “front row group” backstage to chat with Glenn, Chris (he actually signed my poster!), and Stephen, Simon, and John, who are always friendly and funny. I was able to get all the band to sign the poster the Fillmore handed out after the show. I hope to
catch Squeeze again, when they’re due to tour with the B-52s in the summer. Maybe they’ll be playing some new material by then (?).”
