GOODBYE GIRL
Not being a fan of The Police who headlined the event and having heard of various problems encountered by friends at outdoor gigs I wasn’t going to go until a girl I quite fancied told me how much she liked The Police and she would love to see them live. So I rang her up and asked whether she was interested in going and much to my surprise she said yes so I was straight on the phone and purchased 2 tickets. This was the first ever gig to be held at the Milton Keynes Bowl and on the way up there we drove through a prolonged thunderstorm so the venue was pretty drenched when we got there. We took our place at the back of the bowl and I laid out a blanket (without asking my folks permission and the mud ruined it!) and despite being fairly narrow minded musically then I thought the acts were pretty drab (Skafish, Sector 27 & UB40) until Squeeze came on opening up with Slap & Tickle and from memory a sort of ‘greatest hits to date’ set, I thought they were great a shining beacon in a (for me anyway) dismal day musically. The Police came on… eventually and everyone (well nearly) went wild and then the fun started, some considerable time later we were still stuck in glutinous muddy field doing wheel spins in the mud (I know how to impress a girl) until we eventually got out and home in the small hours next morning. Did I get the girl ? No, but I’m still with Squeeze.

Great story. I lived in Milton Keynes at the time and this was indeed the first big gig at the Bowl (I think there had been an earlier all-day something but not a proper rock gig). I remember Squeeze coming on and Chris had a pint glass and held it up to the crowd before they started playing. Can’t remember the mud but was quite near the front for Squeeze and Police so I was moshing rather than rolling in it! The first of many Squeeze shows for me and am seeing them again in a few weeks time.

Oh how I remember the heavens opening as we pulled out of euston station…, thunder, lightning and rain of biblical proportions after a week of glorious weather. We arrived at Milton Keynes bowl to find a quagmire, with roadies shrowgmg out bin liners to try and keep us dry and john peel playing Ruts tracks in memory of Malcolm who had recently died. At 16 years old, I just remember it being one of the best days of my life….. I’d actually gone to see the Police rather than Squeeze, but Squeeze were utterly amazing…… and 28 years later I saw the Police again bt hard rock calling…… if only squeeze had been there too!!!!!!!! :-)

That was one of the best gigs ever. 7 ska bands, including Sector 27, Special AKA, The Selector and main support band UB40. It was so great, the Police were almost a disappointment compared to the other great acts. The mud only added to the occasion.

I was there. Ska fish were having full cans of beer thrown at them . I remember queueing for the toilets and being plastered in mud. Great memories
