So, my main overall impression is the mindblowing reality that Glenn was standing on the stage maybe 6-10 feet from me, singing songs I have been listening to all my life. WOAH! It was amazing, and i had so much fun sometimes I was just laughing to myself.

I pretty much HAD to laugh to myself because the turnout was VERY poor (although I did manage to drag my dad and a friend along). Suzanne said it was the second worst turnout EVER! But having seen the lie of the land (i.e no people) when I walked in, I knew I had better savour this one cos Glenn may never come back!

Glenn did not lose any time assessing the situation either. He walked out on stage, looked at us, and said “It’ll be okay–you’ll see.” And it was! He was brilliant, and the people who were there were fans who had obviously followed Squeeze throughout the 90s. I could tell because everyone got very excited when he said he was gonna do a song from Play (The Truth).

I don’t have a setlist, but it was very similar to the ones posted for
Petaluma and Sacramento. I remember Tough Love, TIWYA, Picadilly (w/audience participation), When the Hangover Strikes, Always on My Mind, Some Fantastic Place, etc. Sadly, tragically, Observatory was not played.

At one point in the show he joked about how he likes to try to create a more intimate feel at the gigs, but that this one might not need it–lol. Nevertheless, he went over to the side of the hall where there was a bench for him to sit on, and he had us bring our chairs up as close as possible to him, so we were grouped around in nesting semicircles, basically. I was too slow, so i was on the outside, and hence no nearer to him than I was during the rest of the concert–lol. But he played Randy Newman, Goodbye Girl, and Up The Junction with no amplification. That part was really fun.

The WOW Hall was freezing, so i didn’t not get to witness in person Glenn’s amazing capacity for sweating! He had a towel but barely needed it. Karin was wearing a wool sweater, a thick wool coat, a scarf, and my coat on top of hers–lol. I was toasty in my wool turtleneck, basking in the Glenn glow.

Fashion report: He has cut his hair very short so it is not curly anymore. The plus side to this is that should he sweat at other concerts it will undoubtedly stick up cutely. He wore some baggy jeans and a tee shirt and tennies. (Brits, i can’t remember what you call tennis shoes. Trainers? Sneakers? Well, he was wearing what he always wears on his feet except when he breaks out the festival wear.)

At the end of the show Glenn jumped off the side of the stage. He seemed to take a long time to come out for the encore, esp since our numbers were few and we could not make much of a clambor! Finally he came back, and sang a couple more songs, and then goodnight.

After the show I found out he had hurt his ankle very badly when he jumped off the stage. In fact, he may possibly even have broken it. So there was no meet and greet. (So sad for the large percentage of audience members who stayed to see him!) But i was allowed to go back to the RV and talk to him a little. Poor guy was in a very bad way–obviously in lots of pain. He was really gracious, though. I helped him ice his ankle and my dad took some pics of us. Glenn bravely smiled though his pain, just like in Tracks of My Tears, except that it was physical pain.
