In a nutshell…..Great night, Glenn was on top form, the band were fantastic, if a bunch of nutters, the new songs are brilliant and I can’t wait for the album!
Alright, a bit more detail. The Fleece is usually a good venue for Glenn, it didn’t look quite sold out but was well-attended mostly by persons of a certain age……plus my daughter who has grown up listening to Squeeze and has exquisite musical taste for someone of 21. I arrived to find a humungous RV (left-hand drive too) complete with trailer neatly parked (well, fairly neatly) down the narrow side-alley…..pictures of “Summer Holiday” here with everyone living cozily on the bus for weeks. Hmmmmm…or should that be hummm!
The support, Rob Reynolds, was fantastic….amazing strong voice, great songs delivered with great passion….definitely worth checking out the album. Glenn (sartorially challenged in a red tee with a ladies’ loo symbol on the front and ripped-knee jeans, and definitely in need of a trim, he’s got ringlets!) and the band sauntered onto the stage 15 minutes late to great cheers. I’m not one for setlists (though David nicked Glenn’s at the end so can report accurately on the running order!) but they began with Another Nail (I think…it all becomes a blur and it might have been Pulling Mussels….) and finished with Black Coffee, and fitted a good selection of material in between. Old stuff included Tempted, Is That Love, Hourglass, Slap & Tickle which morphed into a terrific version of Take Me, Goodbye Girl (acoustically), The Truth (also acoustically), and more. From TIGT we had This Is Where You Ain’t and Parallel World, and new stuff Domestic Distortion, Neptune, Genitalia of a Fool, Untouchable, Hot Shaved Asian Teens, all of which were excellent. The venue must have been having kittens as Glenn ran 15 minutes over curfew (no late license on a Sunday), and a few diehards hung around to talk to him afterwards, ignoring the strong hints from the staff to go home. I did my usual, went to say hello and got tongue-tied …gabbled something about how great it was to see him with a band again and how much he seemed to be enjoying himself……..he of course was niceness itself.
