I NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD HAPPEN……
For those who don’t know me (which will be most of you) I have been a member of Harrow Cricket Club since 1968 (as a 11 year old junior player), and one of the contracts in my business is to maintain the grounds there. Back in the early 1980’s I promoted several gigs at the Club, mainly small pub bands and we were over the moon when Mickey Jupp agreed to play here. Mickey was a fairly big name whose songs were covered by the likes of Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds & Dr Feelgood. However, what with work commitments,marriage etc I just did’nt seem to have the time to do this sort of thing anymore. Anyway, after regularly seeing Glenn live I wondered if we could afford and successfully put on a gig for someone of his stature. After making contact with his booking agency, I was asked whether we would be interested in Glenn & The Fluffers as they were looking for a venue as a warm up for their gig at The Cabot Hall on the 19th. I was outside on the cricket field when I got the call to confirm everything and my Assistant must have wondered what was going on when I ran towards him punching the air with excitement. The day itself arrived and I still had to pinch myself when the sight of Glenn’s RV appeared up the road and into our car park. After setting up, it was amazing to hear Glenn playing Footprints & Annie in our empty clubhouse and they proceeded to play a very long soundcheck which was just great to hear.The gig itself for me flashed by and it was an fantastic experience to see one of my favourite bands playing in a venue which is virtually my second home. Glenn,Simon,Stephen & Lucy mixed and chatted freely to everyone in the bar afterwards and some of our regulars have since become fans. The end result was worth all the effort.(Glenn & The Fluffers have since returned to play here twice more since this gig)
