Wk 7, Half a review

Half-Term week and the kids are off school, so I decided that the time was right to induct my daughter Kirsty in to the world of Glenn, live music & pubs.
The agreement was we would only stay till half time, hence the half a review, but we got more than we had anticipated.
On arrival there were a bunch of friends from the North (and South) – Mitzi, Sue, Liz, Gary, Val, Lou, Simon and many more – and no sooner had the introductions and welcomes been made than most of the group got up and put their coats on! Something I had said? A mass cigarette break? No, Glenn was granting Studio Tours (just like Holywood) and the first lucky few were off to be shown round 45rpm Studios.
We were in group 2 and what a treat it was, Glenn driving us there and then showing us around his domain. The reception area had a tent like canopy suspended from the ceiling below which hung three drums and the first thought I had was “I’ve come across the desert….”. He showed us his record collection (first record he ever bought with his own money was Hole In My Shoe by Traffic), the kitchen and storage rooms and the Fluffers room (it’s not what you think) then on to the studio itself. The large control room leads on to three small booths to the side and then a larger live room ahead, where you can rehearse or record with enough room to face each other and interact. There were also some old framed Squeeze posters, doors removed from the previous 45rpm in Blackheath (with masking tape lengths that would have been on the mixing desk for the making of TAPP showing what was coming through which channels) and I saw a DVD cover mock-up with the title Fluffer, certificate 18 and a photo of Glenn on the front. He said he was recording an e.p. with Nine Below Zero and mentioned another couple of projects for the future. Glenn took time out to have a chat with Kirsty too, which was beyond the call of duty and added to the happy memories for her. What a gent, it’s not over the top to say I was thrilled.
Back to the pub and the show. No Lucy tonight, so for the first half at least, Glenn played bass and Dennis from Nine Below Zero put in a shift as lead/rhythm guitarist, whilst Simon and Stephen did their thing.
Not too many surprises in the set; there was Bill Withers’ Ain’t No Sunshine, Black Sheep, Still, Goodbye Girl (with a fantastic harpsichord solo), Hostage, Parallel World, Voodoo Chile with Dennis on lead (he’s no slouch) and the slow slow Up The Junction.
Confirmation that next week will again be Electronic week and that will be it for the current run.
I do hope there will be a week 9, 10, 11 etc in the future, cos Tuesday nights will seem pretty barren with only Emmerdale and Holby for company.
