A very interesting night. The place was nearly full and a strange mix of Squeeze / Glenn fans / Nine below Zero heads (you can spot a blues fan a mile off). Glenn appeared solo at first and opened with Randy Crawford’s ‘One day I’ll fly away’ which he described as a beautiful song. After another couple, he introduced Simon who accompanied him for a further 2 tracks before calling in 9 below 0. What ensued was a highly entertaining and somewhat ramshackle mix of blues and bluesed-up Glenn & Squeeze songs. The addition of harmonica to Labeled with love was great, Hostage sounded ballsier as did Still.

What was interesting was how Glenn at times became the lead guitarist on the 9 below 0 tracks. It reminded me of his playing when Squeeze were in their infancy – raw and bluesy and above all off the cuff.

Simon and the drummer from 9 below 0 enjoyed playing off each others’ rhythms (they are very different in style). Glenn and Simon then left for a while to allow the blues fans some unadulterated fun, then they reappeared on their own for Pulling Mussells before the whole band finished off together with Fleetwood Mac’s Albatross with Glenn taking the main lead melody on guitar. And finally about a quarter of My Generation before they abruptly left the stage because the curfew!

All in all an unusual and entertaining night. A bit all over the gaff but all the more enjoyable for it.

Don’t know if this will be big enough to read – Glenn’s scrawled lyrics to a new song he’s written with Nine below Zero which will undoubtedly appear on the album he’s producing for them. It’s called ‘Chatline Larry’ and, to be brutally honest, it’s a all a bit Chas & Dave, but fun nonetheless. Hope he doesn’t mind me nicking it after the gig – it was there for the taking!

That’s a great item Adrian – just click on the image for a larger version. So, “Adult premium lines been popping Larry’s cork” have they? I’m looking forward to hearing this!
