A bit of an eclectic last night in Charlton, with perhaps 10 permutations of Glenn, Simon and a hatful of guests.
It was a little unusual in the first place, because you could be short, arrive late and still get a place at the front. Probably due to the will he/won’t he nature of this particular show, the pub wasn’t half full, but it was a joy to see the usual and unusual faces again, and wonderful to see Liz, who had travelled from Sheffield and was going back that night.
Permutation 1, Glenn opened with a couple of acoustic numbers including Mud In Your Eye, before strapping on the Strat and,
Perm 2, Simon joined him for a couple of songs including a brilliant Hey Joe.
Perm 3, a couple of youngsters by the name of Henry and Arthur (Glenn dubbed them Ha!), whose friends made up half of the audience, played a couple of their own songs, and a cover of Guns of Brixton and an interesting take on Cool for Cats.
Back to Perm 2 for a few more then we had
Perm 4, Luke from the Raglans with the sound soundman Chris. They played 3 or 4 songs they had recently written that were very very good. Unsure of the titles but the singalong From the Sea to the Mountain top, and a song that may have been called Ghost to Me were terrific.
Back to perm 2 to take us to half time.
Glenn returned solo to play the beautiful trio of Tough Love, Vanity Fair and When The Hangover Strikes. Sighs all round.
Perm 5 was Mike from Los Dawsons joining Simon and Glenn (on bass) to sing Route 66 and Unchain my Heart, where Glenn had to peer at the neck of Mike’s guitar to see what he should be playing.
Back to perm 2 and then we had
Perm 6, the lovely Siobhan Parr. She sang one of my favourite non Squeeze songs, Fred Neil’s Dolphins, then was joined by – Perm 7 – Simon and Glenn (still on bass) for Keep On Running and A Little Piece of my Heart.
A couple more from Simon and Glenn (still on bass) including Monkey on Me, which I don’t think I have heard before (correct me if I’m wrong Martin) before bringing on – Perm 8 – Dennis from Nine Below Zero for Route 66 and a Northern Soul Classic (that has gone completely out of my head).
The evening ended with Glenn still on bass and Simon (still on drums) playing the theme music from Doctor Who oooooeeeeoooooooooo and finally …..My Way.
Chatting to Glenn afterwards, discovered we had both taken our sons to The Valley on Saturday – Charlton won. He said it was the first time that Leon really “got it” about football.
Looks like there will be another Tuesday night next week (between Monday and Wednesday).

Siobhan also sang Lucinda Williams’ I Can’t let go, and Mike didn’t do Route 66, it was One after 909.

Glenn mentioned it at last weeks gig and after checking with The Anchor today they confirmed that Glenn (& Fluffers?) are playing there again tomorrow May 11th. See you there
