And now with (The) Feeling…

I’m not sure what to expect when I walk through the door of The Anchor & Hope on a Tilbrook Tuesday anymore… we’ve had so many wonderful & varied nights there now. Sometimes it’s hard to get the door open as there are so many folk crammed in… other times you can swing a cat & only take out the odd pint of ale or stray punter! Last night it was pretty crowded when I showed up, but just a few faces were familiar: Snip, Nic, birthday boy (Ruislip) Dave, David B, Charlotte, Sue, Lorraine & Neil – great to see you all.

Glenn came to the mic/stage alone for a change, was full of energy & open to almost any song suggestion (except Genitalia which he said he couldn’t entirely remember). The ones I recall: Black Sheep, Melody Motel, Piccadilly, Jolly Comes Home (for Snip), Voodoo Chile (for Ben), Maidstone, Tempted, Best of Times, Letting Go… good choices everyone!!

At one point Glenn called for ‘someone’ who knew the words to Wichita Lineman. A fabulous song, I was already bubbling with excitement – which boiled over when Dan Gillespie Sells, the lead singer from The Feeling, appeared next to Glenn to do the honours. What a treat! I hope for everyone’s sake (especially you, Liz) that this video makes it through Snip’s self-imposed & demanding quality control process!

After the obligatory interval we were presented with Sinead & The Dawnbreakers – you may recall Sinead Quinn from Fame Academy back in 2002 – she still has a fabulous voice, beautiful eyes & an infectious personality. The set was brilliant! A great sound made up from her on lead vocals & acoustic guitar, her hubbie Paul (from The Feeling) on drums, Ray on electric guitar & his cousin Tom on (sometimes literally) double bass. Plus all the guys were on backing vocals too. They seemed to be having a lot of fun – and with good reason since as well as making great music, it also happened to be Paul’s 30th birthday… which may have explained why the pub was quite so full!

If you get a chance to see these guys, you should. The majority of their songs were self-penned & absolutely brilliant. I especially liked the closing one – Yes Woman. A fair few covers were mixed in too, including Hound Dog & Rock Around The Clock, so that should give you a feel for the style of music.

Oh, and of course when a flaming cake was presented we all sang Happy Birthday with them too! Most of the pub sang it just to Paul, but a few of us added Dave to the celebration :-)

To finish things off, Glenn joined the band for a couple of numbers. I can only remember the one that went: (Glenn) My girl is red hot (audience) Your girl is Diddley Squat! (Not Ridley Scott, as Tom suggested!). A perfect end to a perfect night. Wonderful live music, plenty of audience interaction, big grins all round!!!

Thank you Anchor & Hope, thank you Glenn, thank you Sinead & the Dawnbreakers, thank you Dan, thank you Suzanne, thank you David for the fab photos & thank you Snip for the clips I await with eager anticipation :-) Roll on June 8th… who’s coming?!

  @Gill, Hi Gill, your brilliant review has made me feel a bit better for missing Tuesday. Your words & David’s photos (and hopefully Snip’s video) have colour-tinted the black & white of my imagination. Thoroughly enjoyed reading it; better than the blether from the usual fella!

Thanks for the fantastic review Gill, you have the knack of making me feel almost like I was there but also insanely jealous that I missed it!
A small contingent of Northerners are hoping to be there on the 8th, well me & Mitzi at least!

Great review, Gill, thanks. I absolutely adore The Feeling so am sorry I missed this one, but am looking forward to Snip’s video of Wichita Lineman and seeing them at Cornbury.

  @Liz Harrison, – Liz, i’m sure i heard on the news that they’ve had to cancel their appearance at the festival. Apparently the lead singer hurt his back practising a 360 (must have been skateboarding or something)!

@Gill Great review and summed up the night perfectly – it really was a night where you really did stand a chance of having your fav song from the archive sung for you.
