The Anchor & Hope is the venue for my first home fixture of the season, and whilst the old place has had higher attendances there is still a great atmosphere to be had before kick off.
The home fans include Davids B&S, Snip and Nicki, Val, Gill, Sarah, Mike O and our mascot Neil. The away fans – Cathy, Liz and Sue – arrive around 8.30 and it’s almost time for the whistle to blow.
Si Sports have their cameras poised as Tilbrook leads his team out, with Hanson close behind. They settle in to their familiar 1-1 formation and we’re off. The first half is a bit scrappy but totally entertaining, with Tilbrook wielding his bass and Hanson on drums. The boys immediately go one-nil up with a sumptuous version of Randy Crawford’s “One Day I’ll Fly Away” and hold their own with Too Many Teardrops, Taxman, Billie Jean, Dock of The Bay, Tracks of my Tears, Keep On Running and an aborted You Spin Me Round in honour of (Pete) Burns night.
During the second half they introduce substitute Dennis Greaves (no relation) whose silky skills and showboating are a delight and light up the pitch, but he was soon shown the red card and the lads had to play out the remaining minutes as a duo. They gave us Melody Motel, Tempted, a song I think was called Hercules, a cover of If You Want it Here It Is, an awesome medley of Anarchy In The UK, Green Green Grass of Home and 9 to 5 amongst others, and James Brown’s I Got You (Hanson was given a caution at the start of this for miss-timing his tackle!).
There was no extra time and at the final whistle the crowd gave a roar for the victory tonight and 3 points in the bag. Our boys sit on top of the league and with Home fixtures every Tuesday night I suspect they will be champions before long. I was over the moon.

Okay, serious bit….as has been said many times, it wouldn’t have been half as good without the warmth and friendship of those listed above. In that respect, the past 12 months have been fabulouslovelygreatsupercalifragilisticexpealidocious.

@Neal – I was watching and you had that look that we’ve all now acquired, which says “is this really happening?”, and the beauty is (apart from Gill, Val, Liz, Cathy, Sarah, Nicki, Sue obviously) that feeling returns every A&H night. Great to meet you mate.

It sounds like a brilliant night. I’ve been a fan for many years, but only went to my first A&H night earlier this month – and had the best time. But I couldn’t find anyone to come along with me last night, and was a bit nervous about going on my own. Will definitely be braver in future!

  No need to be nervous about coming on your own, next time come down the front and meet the ‘gang’ most of us met up in the first place by going there on our ownsomes. These nights are really too good to miss, the only stipulation is that if you are over 5’4″ in height you must stand behind me and Neal !

    Thanks, Dave – I might take you up on that at the next gig. With regards to height, I’m only 5ft 2in, but at the Anchor & Hope on 4th Jan I was near the back and could hardly see a thing, so was thinking of wearing extremely high heels for my next visit!

      Only just had time to read this page and an excellent review from Mark – as always as well as all the nice comments! Louisa – as Dave says come on down to the front and we are all there – on the theme of being at the back – we are hoping to link the camera to the TV screens above the bar so everyone can have an idea of whats going on “down the front”.
      Nice to see the whole gang again!

      @ Louise – On the occasions that we “northern contingent” make it, we usually turn up with just minutes to spare. We have found that it is quite easy to elbow your way to the front, by saying you need to go to the Ladies! Definitely go, even if you’re on your own and introduce yourself – you’ll find them a friendly bunch!
      @ Snip – great idea! And it was lovely to see the whole (or nearly whole) gang there.

A great occasion to put faces to names. A wonderfully crafted set, rehearsed to excellence and faultlessly executed. This was not.
So it was live music at its rawest and just the way it should be, I felt privillaged to have been a part of what feels like a private jam session amoungst friends. Thanks Glenn and Simon and all at the A and H, not forgetting the absolutely superb Dennis Greaves. Please Mr Snip Turn as you were recording all night, could you please put on you tube, Mr Greaves and especially him playing ” If it wasn’t for bad luck”. I dont think live music gets much better than that.
Thank you all involved, for making it such a great night, especially Sheila.

David, Just read the comments back from 2011, when i first attended the A&H! Happy times and very special evenings seeing Glenn, Simon and a few more over the 6 week stint……wouldn’t it be great to do it all again!!????
