Published on Wednesday 9 March 2011 11:28 in the Shields GazetteVETERAN rockers Squeeze are coming to South Tyneside for a Great North Run weekend concert.
Famous for hits such as Up The Junction and Cool For Cats, the Londoners remain one of Britain’s most endearing bands.
And thousands of fans are expected to flock to Gypsies Green Stadium, on the South Shields seafront, for the gig on Friday, September 16, barely 48 hours before the annual Newcastle to South Shields half-marathon takes place.
Last year’s Great North Run weekend saw Jethro Tull play the same venue, and concert organisers – South Tyneside Council and the Customs House – are confident Squeeze will prove an even more popular attraction when tickets go on sale later this week.
Coun Tracey Dixon, lead member for culture and wellbeing, said: “It’s fantastic that we are able to be bringing another massive name from the world of music to South Shields.
“Squeeze are such a brilliant band, and this concert is bound to attract even more visitors to our borough and our fabulous seafront for the Great North Run weekend.”
Formed in 1973 in South London by Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, Squeeze remains one of the most popular British bands of all time, even though keyboard player Jools Holland is no longer in the line-up.
Customs House executive director Ray Spencer added: “Chris Difford’s lyrics and Glen Tilbrook’s music is recognised as making a lasting and major contribution to popular music – we are delighted to welcome them to South Shields.
“A performance made possible by working in partnership with South Tyneside Council, we know it will be even bigger and better than last year’s concert, so get along to share in a bit of history as these musical legends bring their unique talents to Gypsies Green Stadium.”
Tickets for the concert go on sale at 10am on Friday from the Customs House Box Office.
It’s already shaping up to be a great summer for pop concerts after yesterday’s Gazette exclusive that Joe McElderry and Sophie Ellis-Bextor will be performing free as headline acts during the South Tyneside Summer Festival.
Hometown hero and X Factor winner Joe will perform in Bents Park on Sunday, July 24, with Sophie Ellis-Bextor on stage seven days earlier.
Squeeze will perform at Gypsies Green Stadium on Friday, September 16. Tickets cost £27.50 and are available by calling the Customs House
