  LEGENDARY British band Squeeze kicked off Great North Run weekend in style with a packed-out concert on Friday.
  
  The London boys, fronted by Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook wowed a packed-out marquee at Gypsies Green stadium in South Shields with a selection of their greatest hits.
  
  And despite the torrential rain outside, it was ‘Cool for Cats’ in the tent.
  
  Trudging through the downpour to get to the stadium, people could be forgiven for not being in the best of moods for a concert.
  
  But once snugly inside the marquee, the weather outside was forgotten, for thousands had turned up to see one of Britain’s best-loved bands.
  
  Squeeze are a group with songs that have stuck in the hearts and minds of people since their release, some more than 30 years ago.
  
  They have one of the country’s best songwriting partnerships at its core, and are rightly regarded as one of the great singles bands.
  
  Fronted by songwriting duo Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, the band were in the borough to mark Great North Run weekend.
  
  They strolled on stage to rapturous applause and launched straight into a powerful version of Black Coffee In Bed, complete with a funky middle bit and a call-and-response section with the crowd.
  
  Tilbrook was in fine voice, and moved swiftly into Is That Love, which was delivered with more energy than you’d expect for a band approaching their 40th anniversary.
  
  His guitar playing was also brilliant, shooting out tight, melodic solos throughout the gig.
  
  After Annie Get Your Gun, the band slowed the tempo down with a countrified Labelled With Love, which had fans old and young swaying along and couples cuddling up together before the crowd launched into a mass singalong.
  
  More fan favourites came and went, with Squeeze proving to be the sort of band that have many more hits than people realise.
  
  They played Loving You Tonight and Tempted, both originally sung by Paul Carrack from Mike and the Mechanics, but sang beautifully by Tilbrook here.
  
  For most of the show, Difford was content to play the static sideman to Tilbrook’s more playful frontman.
  
  But towards the end of the set, with the debut Take Me, I’m Yours and Pulling Mussels From A Shell, he really came to life, and the classic Squeeze sound of both singers’ voices emerged.
  
  The band then left the stage, but with their two biggest singles still to come, the crowd called them back on and both frontmen looked delighted at the response.
  
  Tilbrook looked like he was having a great time all night, and thanked the crowd for their support, while Difford wished yesterday’s runners well before racing into Cool For Cats.
  
  His voice sounded great and everyone was dancing along.
  
  That song, along with set closer Up The Junction, are national treasures, singles that most people can at least hum along to if they don’t know the words.
  
  And with that, they were gone, and everyone left the tent and went out into the cold night, feeling a little bit warmer inside.
