I was fortunate enough to be given the chance to go to what was in effect a gig solely for fans and owners of Lewes FC on Monday courtesy of a colleague who is a Lewes supporter who couldn’t make it and with the blessing of the club chairman. It was terrific. The Town Hall was an intimate venue with around 300 present and it was the perfect tour warm-up in front of an appreciative crowd, some wearing the Lewes FC football shirts emblazoned with ‘Squeeze’ in the middle as the club’s ‘sponsor’ and presumably Chris’s local team. Glenn warned the crowd there might be some teething troubles as they were trying things out for the tour and there were a few technical problems throughout but nothing that could spoil the show. There were 26 songs in all including eight from Cradle, just missing Top of the Form, Sunny, Haywire and Honeytrap. Glenn joked he was having trouble learning to sing Open (for me the best Squeeze song since Some Fantastic Place? but it sounded great and his guitar failed to work for the Happy days solo but the band gave us a burst of it straight after the song was complete. There were also airings for Elephant Ride, with Glenn on his own playing keyboards, and The Truth which is always a poignant one for me because it signified the problems Chris was going through at the time. The band rocked for two cover versions, Harper Valley PTA and I Don’t Wanna Grow Up which Chris clearly enjoyed singing. All in all a fabulous two hours with the bonus of three songs from a very talented 12 year old local girl called Lola ahead of the main gig. Glenn said afterwards there had been some nerves and he was appreciative of the warm response from the Lewes crowd and it did look as though Lucy and Melvyn Duffy, who joined the band onstage after the first few songs were a bit nervous, concentrating intently throughout rather than worrying about stage performance. Chris said the last band to play at Lewes Town Hall were Pink Floyd and asked whatever happened to them. We know what’s happening to Squeeze next – a tour with a new album and I am very much looking forward to being in Plymouth on Friday. I don’t think anyone with tickets for the tour will be disappointed.

  Thanks so much for the review Paul – what a fantastic night! Let’s hope Glenn learns to sing ‘Open’ and keeps it in the setlist – it’s my favourite track from the album.

    I’m so excited that so much of the album is being played, not just 4 or 5 and then the hits. I can’t wait to hear Snap, Crackle and Pop with all the backing singers as that is one killer chorus. Shame that Honeytrap didn’t feature but I’m sure they’ll shift things around as the tour progresses.

I’ve been buying Squeeze records for…almost as long as they’ve been making them, sadly- and I have to say that the newer songs fitted very well alongside the old favourites. Often it seems as if songwriting powers wain when comfortable middle age arrives, but on last nights showing that doesn’t seem to apply to Chris and Glenn, and I very much look forward to the new album arriving on my doormat.

The performance in Lewes was quite marvellous. If they are that good in warm up they’ll be fabulous once they build a real understanding and the newer members relax a little. If you don’t yet have a ticket for the tour, or you haven’t yet ordered the album, get your finger out! You won’t regret it on that showing.
