I met Harri Kakoulli for the first time in 2005. I stepped off the tube in Liverpool Street Station in the dark seedy underworld that is the East End of London. At least that’s what it seems like if you’re from Devon. Despite the money, the rebuilding of much of the poor housing stock and the gentrification of streets with trendy bars, exotic restaurants and coffee bars there’s still something dark, dirty and dangerous about the small alleys that lead to where Jack the Ripper preyed upon women.

Harri was incredibly charming and engaging and we went for a drink. We both love real ale. We both love music. None of his friends or musician colleagues ever knew that he’d been in Squeeze. If they did, they never mentioned it. It was something he did when he was a teenager. Like getting married. Something he wasn’t going to do again.

His manager at the time was Clinton Brookes. All three of us were talking in the pub, but I thought that they seemed a bit distracted. Then there was a loud banging and I turned round and noticed a couple having vigorous sex on the picnic table outside the pub. They were really going for it. “I thought you were a bit distracted,” I said. “Yes,” Harri said, “She was giving him oral sex a minute ago.” I wasn’t sure whether I was pleased that I’d missed it. It wouldn’t happen in Devon.

Harri has spent his life in his music creating wonderful textured dance music with a pronounced arabic feel. He’s a man with a deep spiritual attitude to his work. He took me back to his London music studio. Harri lives in Cyprus but had a fabulous basement music studio in London with a movie producer above and a nearly secret door down a small staircase to a lair with huge speakers, racks of audio equipment and instruments. He played me early outtakes from the Cool For Cats album, his work on an unreleased Peter Perrett (of The Only Ones) album and lots of his early work. We became good friends. The studio was bought by Tracey Emin and redeveloped.

He gave me a CD with his remixes of two Squeeze songs, ‘Take Me I’m Yours’ and ‘Goodbye Girl’. I love them. It’s a shame that the original master tape for Take Me I’m Yours has gone missing from the Universal Music tape library as nobody can get access to the original multi-track.
