Cat On a Wall // Night Ride / Backtrack

Released in July 1977, on Deptford Fun City Records with a red and blue sleeve with various photos of Squeeze live in concert. Either both labels are blue (with a photo of Deptford), or one label is pink and one blue. This is the blue version. No-one knows why, although it was distributed by Faulty Products, which might help explain it. Approximately 20,000 were sold. I’m not sure Harry Kakoulli would have been too impressed at having his name spelt Kakdulli, though. The band recorded five tracks at Pathway studios in 1977 – including the three released on this EP. The lyrics Chris originally wrote for Cat On a Wall went “Last thing you see she’s mirroring her face, And smelling like a flower in spring…” which got changed to “mirror smashed in her face” – it was the punk era after all. DFC 06, 08 and 09 were never released leading to much speculation that they were Squeeze or solo projects. According to Faulty Products, they “Were going to be various projects, but not solely for members of Squeeze as some people believe.” One follow-up idea was going to be a dance LP on Deptford Fun City, but Squeeze only recorded “On The Beach”. Their version of this Cliff Richard classic was played on Capital Radio on 11th October 1981, but has never been released.
