Don’t Be a Stranger
(Difford/Tilbrook)
Don’t be a stranger
A crab in his shell
Alone in a shoebox
A wish in a well
Left on a sideboard
Or behind a clock
A world without reason
Where nobody knocks
Nobody answers
‘Cause no one is there
Don’t be a stranger
Alone in your chair
Look out the window
Imagine the most
Hero Walt Disney
A check in the post
Bubble of life
The burst isn’t his
High as the motion
That sits like a brick
Don’t be a stranger
Be my old chum
Look at the world
And all you have done
Honey and bees
Seeing the sunlight
But don’t see the trees
Wood is so cold
Day is too long
So come out and see me
Where you belong
Throw out the anchor
Track back on shore
Don’t be a stranger
With me anymore
Don’t be a stranger
Be my old chum
Look at the world
And all you have done
Don’t be a stranger
Don’t be a stranger
Don’t be a stranger
Don’t be a stranger
Thanks to DionysusVoice for transcribing these lyrics.
I fell in love with this song the first time I put on some headphones and really listened to the lyrics — I actually burst into tears. Not only are the words (as difficult to understand as some are) wise, but Glenn’s voice is particularly soothing, and the instrumentals are just plain beautiful. In fact, I think one of the greatest shames in life is that this song never made it onto one of their major albums — it really deserves to be heard, and it remains my personal favorite of their obscure singles. Truly blessed is the mortal who gets to hear it!
I’m not familiar with this one – which year was it released?
It was an extra track on the Some Fantastic Place CD single Digipak release in 1993.
CD (digipak)
“Some Fantastic Place” (4:29)
“Is That The Time?” (3:24)
“Don’t Be A Stranger” (4:55)
“Stark Naked” (3:47)
Amazingly Some Fantastic Place got to No 73 on the UK singles chart.
