Glenn Tilbrook – Jesus Was A Cross Maker (Judee Sill cover) to combat food poverty

Glenn’s been busy in the studio recording a song a week to raise money for food banks to attempt to alleviate food poverty. He’s been posting songs on YouTube with links to donate to charities in the UK, the USA and Australia.

In the UK, levels of food insecurity in Britain are among the highest in Europe. Please give what you can afford. It makes a massive difference to people with the least. Donation links are below.

Listen on headphones or a great system to hear how wonderfully it’s been produced/engineered .

Glenn’s solo dates were in support of The Trussell Trust:

Glenn says “It is shameful that in the 21st century there are people that can’t afford to put food on the table. Anyone, from any walk of life, can fall upon dire times, and I hope that by doing this tour it will remind people that there is a very real need. Most of us can do something to help – be it giving some food or a little money – and I hope people coming to the shows are inspired to donate.”

Thank you.

If you’ve not heard of Judee Sill, do seek out her extraordinary music and read about her extraordinary life. Childhood bereavement, armed robbery, reform school, hard drugs, jazz, a crippling heroin addiction, sex work, scams and cheque forgery, the cover of Rolling Stone, commercial failure, car accidents, failed surgery, cartooning, theosophy, marriage, bisexualism and death by drug overdose accompanied by a note with “a meditation on rapture, the hereafter, and the innate mystery of life” which was a diary entry or song idea rather than a suicide note.

Here are the lyrics. Her music is complex, troubled, sophisticated and transcendent. Her themes are often of redemption. Do seek her out if you can.

Jesus Was A Cross Maker

Sweet silver angels over the sea
Please come down flying low for me
One time I trusted a stranger
Cos’ I heard his sweet song
And it was gently enticing me
Though there was something wrong
But when I turned he was gone
Blinding me, his song remains reminding me
He’s a bandit and a heart breaker
Oh, but Jesus was a cross maker

Sweet silver angels over the sea
Please come down flying low for me
He wages war with the devil
A pistol by his side
And tho he chases him out windows
And won’t give him a place to hide
He keeps his door open wide
Fighting him he lights a lamp inviting him
He’s a bandit and a heart breaker
Oh, but Jesus was a cross maker

Sweet silver angels over the sea
Please come down flying low for me
I heard the thunder come rumbling
the light never looked so dim
I see the junction get nearer
and danger is in the wind
And either road’s looking grim
Hiding me, I flee, desire dividing me
He’s a bandit and a heart breaker
Oh, but Jesus was a cross maker
Yes, Jesus was a cross maker
Yes, Jesus was a cross maker

Sweet silver angels over the sea
Please come down flyin’ low for me
