Glenn and the Fluffers at the Anchor & Hope – Still!

As David mentioned a while back, Glenn and the Fluffers have been playing a series of  informal, creative, and lively gigs at The Anchor and Hope in London (SE7) on Tuesdays.

Many keyboards are necessary for electronic Funkytown!

The band seem to be having a fantastic time, and so do the audience! There have been tons of people writing into the Glenn List about these very popular shows. They like to mix things up, for example last Tuesday Glenn announced it would be an “electronic evening”, and Mark from the Glenn list was there.

What a bizarre, brilliant, bonkers evening. Glenn had promised an electronic evening this week and joked about Kraftwerk but I thought he just meant not acoustic. However, true to his word, the only guitar in sight was Lucy’s bass. Even Simon was playing keyboard drums.

The set was a mixed bag, some old, some new, some borrowed and some blues. Rehearsals appeared to be minimal, but the show was a riot of laughs, fluffed lines, robotic moves (Simon & Lucy), surprised looks when a song didn’t work, more surprised looks when they did. Incredible, terrible, fantastic, sometimes in the same song.

Oh, did I mention the make up? They all wore eye liner.

Thanks to the miracle of modern YouTube, you can watch some of these songs for yourself! Val posted Another Nail, fully electronic (eyeliner sadly not visible in the low lighting), Funkytown, and Don’t You Want Me, to which Glenn doesn’t appear to know many of the lyrics, but he gets lots of help!

That’s nothing. The week before Glenn was ill and couldn’t show up at all, so The Fluffers played with whoever wanted to guest vocal! Many of the volunteers were really very fine singers, especially the pub landlord, who knocked my socks off with Stand By Me. So did Stephen Large with his great melodica solo! The song is swiftly followed on the same video clip by Valerie, which is also excellent.

That last one was uploaded by snipturn, who has posted tons of great live YouTube videos of Glenn (solo, with the Fluffers, and with Squeeze) in his channel! I particularly love this clip of Glenn singing The Waiting Game at a solo show in Nottingham on December 12. An especially fun video is from the previous December, when Glenn and the Flufffers played Tempted to a fan from the audience, who ended up joining them on tambourine and backing vocals. Everyone’s dancing, joking around, and having a great time, and the audio and video quality are both very good.

Just go see it!

The Anchor and Hope shows will be continuing through February and admission is free, so get down there if you can! They’re packed; advice from the Glenn list is “Be early, or be tall!”

Squeeze Songbook

I’ve been working on the Squeeze Songbook recently, aided by Chris Difford who kindly sent me a CD of all the Squeeze lyrics he has on his Mac. You can find it under SQUEEZE SONGBOOK in the header. Please take a look. I’ve been able to include songs such as The Hunt and Saints Alive as well as No Disco Kid, No and other rarities and b-sides. I’ve also included alternative versions of some.

I’ve also included the Glenn Tilbrook Songbook as well as the Chris Difford Songbook with their solo work.

Comments are open! So please let me know if I’ve got any of them wrong – or any stories you have of misunderstanding them. Pulling muscles for Michelle anyone?

Using the Comments

Just a tip for new visitors: read the comments to the blog posts! A lot of them contain interesting information that may not be available anywhere else on the site.

For example, snipturn has written an extensive and lively review of Glenn and the Fluffers’ series of free pub shows in reply to David’s post about The Anchor and Hope below. He has included a link to a very good YouTube video from the show as well! (He has another one here, and really you should just check out snipturn’s whole channel which he has been updating regularly.)

And David often posts comments himself that include additional information, such as a note from Glenn about his FaceBook friend requests, which is among the comments on Glenn Tilbrook – UK Solo Acoustic Tour.

And of course we would love to read your comments, should the spirit move you!

N.B. Glenn’s tweets are now shown right in the sidebar of this blog, in case you haven’t spotted them! So you can just check here for updates if that’s simplest. (He claims to have BIG BIG news coming up, quite possibly about a band that starts with S….)

Win Tix to Chris’ Songwriting Workshop!

Chris Difford will be holding a songwriting workshop on Saturday 30th January. It is by invitation only, but 5 pairs of tickets will be given away free!

All you have to do is enter at the British Music Experience website (you may want to uncheck the box that asks them to spam you…), and they will notify you by January 22 if you’ve won.

The workshop is described as “a unique, collaborative event for aspiring songwriters as well as fans of Chris, who will be providing a Q&A discussing his songwriting technique and his 30 year musical journey writing top 20 hits, and performing new material with some of his most loved songs.”

The only thing is, I can’t find any information about where it it is! David, do you know?
Chris has also created a very nice Smilebox message (slideshow with text) for the New Year. Enjoy!

4-Album Squeeze Tribute Project!

I just found out that there is a huge Squeeze tribute album project in the making, which will cover the band’s entire first four albums. The guys responsible are Alan Heaton and Steve Turnidge, who have made and marketed three successful tribute albums already for bands they love: Jellyfish, The Posies, and Roxy Music.

Their approach is extremely grassroots. They searched on YouTube for bands doing tribute songs for Jellyfish, and were thrilled and surprised to discover that even that fairly obscure band did have good tribute songs already. So they went on to contact the best of the bands on YouTube, set up a MySpace page to attract more artists, and managed to put together an album they’re extremely proud of. They ended up using bands from four continents, all of it done via the internet!

The project was low cost, fostered direct communication with the artists (each of whom recorded the tracks themselves and then sent them to Alan and Steve), and 100% committed to great music.

Alan says, “One thing you’ll notice about the contributors to our records – for the most part, they are not “big-name” artists by any means – at least not yet. One thing that I want to make completely clear is that I couldn’t care less if you’re the Red Hot Chili Peppers or a band of high school kids – in fact, we had two bands of high school kids on Take Refuge In Pleasure. All I care about is how your Squeeze cover sounds.”

He also talks a bit about why he chose Squeeze:

“Squeeze is such a great band. They have the great synergy between Chris Difford’s poignant-yet-accessible lyrics and Glenn Tilbrook’s musical arrangements, and the whole band’s amazing musicianship, despite a rotating set of band members.”

So true!

This project sounds fascinating to me, and I can’t wait to see how it comes out. One of the parts I find most interesting is that the albums they put out have been so comprehensive. Jellyfish only had two official album releases, but there are a bunch of “previously unreleased” songs in a box set, and the Jellyfish tribute album ended up covering all the songs on the two studio albums, plus every single one of the unreleased tracks! Clearly they are really passionate about the bands they cover.

Their label is called Burning Sky Records, and the MySpace page for the Squeeze project is Songs of Squeeze Revisited. There are no songs up yet, but a quick look at their Jellyfish Tribute Album’s page gives me hope that before long we will be able to preview some of those Squeeze covers!

Wow, David Has Been Busy!

David (aka packetofthree) has not only continued his flurry of blog entries here, but he’s also taken it upon himself to create a packetofthree channel on YouTube! He wrote to the Glenn List to invite us to go take a look at his latest addition, a live video of Glenn singing “Ray and Me” in Amsterdam in 2006.

That was fun to see, but I personally really got a kick out of seeing Squeeze perform “It’s Over” at a record store in Dallas! There are a few heads in the way, but that did not stop me from noticing the unlikely pairing of Glenn’s stripey trousers from the “This Summer” video with the fringed suede jacket from the “Some Fantastic Place” album insert! Definitely a fashion time capsule for him. Also, the performance is unusual in that Glenn and Chris are playing acoustic guitars, and the rest of the band are just standing around so they can sing the backups!

Check it out!

Disco Kid

Back in 1975 Squeeze had a brush with the pop world being signed to BTM records and being close to releasing their first single – an early recording of ‘Take Me I’m Yours’. On the b-side was planned to be ‘No Disco Kid No’. It was finally released on an obscure compilation CD ‘Never Mind the Sex Pistols, Here’s the Bollocks’ in 2006 as Disco Kid.

It got covered in a great version called NDK on Chris Holland’s very limited edition album ‘hoopatasso’ (along with another brilliant Difford and Tilbrook composition from the early days ‘This is the Way Forward’) It was re-released on his Brother Sun Sister Moon album. Enjoy!
