Chris and Glenn on BBC Radio 2 tonight

Today, 22:00 on BBC Radio 2

Bob Harris continues to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the classic music TV show. Each programme looks at one complete series of the original Old Grey Whistle Test and includes archive recordings alongside new interviews and recorded sessions with guests from the featured series.
Programme eight includes new live sessions from Squeeze and Thin Lizzy. Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook of Squeeze chat with Bob about the early days of the band and members of Thin Lizzy reminisce about Phil Lynott and their breakthrough success with the Jailbreak album.
There are further new session tracks from Ian Anderson, who performs a Jethro Tull medley; and guitarist Gordon Giltrap provides a stunning new performance of his hit single Heartsong

Up the Junction – on BBC Radio 4

As reported here in June, BBC Radio 4 has just hosted a half-hour programme on Up the Junction.

You can listen to it again for the next 7 days here:

After that you can listen here:
Lyrical Journey – Up the Junction

Here’s what the BBC web site has to say:

In a series which explores the mysterious relationship between much-loved songs, and the places which inspired them, presenter Jonathan Maitland goes on a lyrical journey close to his heart. A passionate ‘Squeeze’ fan, he meets the band’s lyricist Chris Difford and takes him to Clapham Common which features in his 1979 hit ‘Up the Junction’.

So how has the area changed since he wrote the song, and who else has it inspired? Could the song only ever have been about Clapham – or could the man in the song have had ‘some or other passion’ with a girl from Balham? And how does Chris feel about performing at the station itself?

Huey Morgan sits in for Lauren and is joined by Squeeze for a live session. It’s been over 30 years since the Deptford greats released their debut album and they returned in October with a new album full of reworkings of their best loved songs. Called Spot The Difference, it is their first studio album in twelve years and was recorded partly so the band could regain copyright control of some of their greatest hits.

Squeeze – On the Beach

Back in 1978 Squeeze had great plans – as well as being signed to A&M they were going to keep their independent roots and record a dance album for release on Deptford Fun City Records. Great idea. Never happened. What did get recorded, however, was a version of Cliff Richard’s ‘On the Beach’. They broadcast it once on local radio and my friend Sally recorded it. Thanks to her, here it is:

On the Beach – Squeeze

I can think of nothin’ better
Than dancin’ on the beach
See a girl, you can go and get her
All your troubles will be out of reach

On the beach, you can dance to a rock ‘n’ roll
On the beach, hear the Bosanova played with soul
On the beach, you can dance and twist and shout
On the beach, everybody hear me come on out
On the beach, come on everybody stomp your feet
On the beach, you can dance with anyone you meet
Cos all your troubles are out of reach
On the beach

Mmmm, this is fun
Mmmm, won’t you tell me I’m the one you’re gonna dance with
Yeah, Bosanova
Mmmm, this is fun
Mmmm, now I know you’re the one I’m gonna dance with
Yeah, twist and shout now

You can do the dance that you want to
With anyone that you meet
And if the Bosanova doesn’t get you
The Twist’ll have you on your feet

On the beach, you can dance to a rock ‘n’ roll
On the beach, here the Bosanova played with soul
On the beach, you can dance and twist and shout
On the beach, everybody hear me come on out
On the beach, come on everybody stomp your feet
On the beach, you can dance with anyone you meet
Cos all your troubles are out of reach
On the beach

‘Cool For Cats’ – by Kraftwerk

I love this spoof recording of ‘Cool For Cats’ by Kraftwerk to the tune of Kraftwerk’s ‘The Model’. It was only available on a white label 7″ single with no indication of its origin or the vocalist. It amused me – I hope it will amuse you!

Kraftwerk – Cool For Cats

Here’s what I was told about it:

I know little about this record. My guess is it’s a local band from the east midlands (I live in Nottingham).
The white sleeve is numbered 061 so it was likely to be a small pressing 100? 200? 500?
I don’t know who the artist/band is.

Sung to the tune of Kraftwerks “The Model” I think it is a classic gem, with humour too.
